Monaghan County Council confirmed today that the new Margaret Skinnader roundabout in the town is here to stay.
The announcement came after Cllr Hugh McElvaney - who has dubbed it the ‘crazy roundabout’ - highlighted how the rule of mathematics had outweighed common sense on the matter
Meanwhile, works to redesign the roundabout were approved in May of this year.
At the last meeting of the local authority concerns were raised over the three pedestrian crossings on the structure as well as the likelihood of it "bringing traffic to a standstill".
Over the last month, the council’s executive met with the engineering and design team to discuss the structure in more detail.
The council said that following a meeting with the design team, no concerns over safety were raised and it had received no complaints from the public.
During today's meeting, Cllr McElvaney pointed to his concerns over the slope on the roundabout before reluctantly accepting that it is now a permanent feature.
The local authority said it was confident that the new roundabout "has been constructed properly".
Cllr McElvaney described its permanency as unfortunate.
