The Fine Gael party say they are shocked by Sean McKiernan's actions and the serious offences he committed.
In a statement issued to Northern Sound News, the party said as described by the judge, Mr McKiernan's actions were a serious breach of trust.
These serious crimes have resulted in Navan Mental Health Housing Association LTD having to cease its activities.
They said that we commend the actions of the charity, its auditors, the Gardaí and the DPP which have resulted in justice being served.
The statement added that "Mr McKiernan hasn't been a member of Fine Gael for a number of years." The former cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council was jailed yesterday for 3 years and 9 months in relation to theft of money from the mental health charity.
The 44 year old was jailed for 3 years and 9 months with that final 12 months suspended over the theft of 172,000 euro from Navan Mental Health Housing Association LTD.
