International Day of the Disappeared has been marked today at the site of the bog being searched for the remains of Columba McVeigh, who was from Donaghmore, Co Tyrone.
He was abducted, murdered and secretly buried by the IRA on October 31st, 1975, and is one of 17 people known as the Disappeared.
The lead investigator with the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains, Eamonn Henry told Northern Sound this week he's confident that the remains of Columba McVeigh are in Bragan Bog. A fresh dig got underway last week at the Monaghan bog for the remains of the teenager, who was abducted, murdered and secretly buried by the IRA almost 50 years ago.
It's the seventh time Bragan bog's been searched for Columba McVeigh. This search was planned for Spring this year. However, due to environmental issues, which the team worked closely with National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to resolve.
The ICLVR was unable to proceed until now and a review of the entire area previously search revealed a section that had not been searched, hence the current search that's now underway.
The former Police Ombudsman in the North Nuala O'Loan visited Bragan bog earlier. Speaking to Northern Sound, Baroness O'Loan paid tribute to the work that the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains do.
