Members of the Ballybay-Clones Municipal District are calling for additional funding and resources to support the salting and gritting of rural roads.
Following today's meeting, it was unanimously agreed that the MD would now write to the Department of Transport and to Darragh O'Brien, Minister for Transport.
Cathaoirleach of the Ballbay-Clones MD, Sinead Flynn said there is an "extensive" rural road network within the MD where a significant number of schools and childcare facilities are located.
It was also agreed at today's meeting that the MD would further write to Transport Infrastructure Ireland requesting a review of winter maintenance and salting arrangements within the Municipal District, with a view to expanding coverage.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Flynn said outdoor staff are operating within strict constraints through no fault of their own.
She said it's of vital importance to expand the winter maintenance salting routes and ensure that roads crossing MD boundaries are fully treated, eliminating dangerous conditions for all road users.
Cllr Flynn told Northern Sound: "During the cold spell we saw cars sliding out at junctions, roads becoming impassable, and school buses skidding off the road. People do not get paid to stay at home when frost arrives, and rural communities cannot be expected to stop functioning every time temperatures drop.
"People still have to go to work, children still have to get to school, and life must continue. We must expand the winter maintenance salting routes and ensure that roads crossing Municipal District boundaries are fully treated, eliminating dangerous conditions for all road users."
