The Government is being urged to replace temporary cost-of-living supports with permanent increases in social welfare payments.

The call comes after Coalition leaders agreed to extend reduced fuel excise duties for another month.

Social Justice Ireland says Budget 2027 should instead deliver a permanent €15-a-week increase in core welfare rates, followed by a further €10 increase the following year.

Research and Policy Analyst Michelle Murphy says households on low and fixed incomes need lasting support after years of rising food, energy and housing costs.
