IFA's Ulster/North Leinster Chair calls for appointment of food ombudsman

He also says that farmers deserve a bit more respect from supermarkets.

IFA's Ulster/North Leinster Regional chairman, Frank Brady, has called for the appointment of a food ombudsman and a 'little bit of respect' to be shown to farmers by the supermarkets.

Mr Brady says that if these requests were honoured, farmers wouldn't need the pandemic bonus payment in the first instance.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Mr Brady said there was no doubt but farmers "were in the thick of it" as essential workers during Covid-19 restrictions.

The government, he added, needs to put in a food ombudsman for fair trading so that farmers will get a margin for the product that they sell.

He added that he doesn't think that farmers "can go down the road of looking for €1,000 pandemic payment".

"All we'll get is: them farmers are looking for this and them farmers are looking for that."

Farmers just want a margin from the produce they sell, said Mr Brady.
