It is believed they will not be a strong enough body to deal with issues as they will only have limited power.

A local farming representative says the incoming food ombudsman won't be enough to level the playing field.

The position is to be introduced by the Department of Agriculture next year, but questions remain over what powers it will have.

Minister Charlie McConalogue hopes it would analyse and report on the market, and enforce measures against unfair trading practices.

ICSA's Beef Chair and Monaghan farmer Edmund Graham says an ombudsman isn't enough on its own.
