Mr Hagan volunteered in many capacities, which included being part of the Christmas Lights Committee as well as helping to organise the popular Monahan Country Music Festival.

Paying tribute to the local man, Paul McGeown who volunteered alongside Mr Hagan said "any job was never too big, he was just an overall great lad and a wonderful person."

Mr McGeown told Northern Sound: "Any work that needed to be done voluntarily, James would have been the first one there in the morning and the last one leaving at night, anything that was needed James was always there. He was such a big character, always laughing with members of the community and was such a great lad to have about the place. I want to pay my condolences to James' mother, father, two brothers, sister and the his wider family circle."

Brian 'Beano' Clerkin also paid tribute to the popular 35 year old.

Mr Clerkin told Northern Sound that: "He was a fantastic community man and a real beacon of light for people in Monaghan Town. He was very polite, very welcoming. Always had a great word for everyone and a great chat. He was always on top of news that happened around the town, and then, I suppose, his volunteer and exploits, either through the church or in community events such as the Christmas lights or the Monahan Country Music Festival were well known over many years, and again, he was a great ambassador for the town. He was always welcoming people.

"He was a great face for the likes of events that maybe visitors to monitoring came to because he was just that very open, welcoming figure that kind of shone a great light on the town and Monaghan people. When news broke last weekend of James' passing there was a huge outpouring of great memories and stories of James.

"A huge outpouring on social media, and a lot of people very upset, because, as I said, he was a great figure around Monaghan Town, great for news, great community spirit, and a very, very strong ambassador for Monaghan.

"Sometimes the word legend is overused, but James was a legend because he had such a positive outlook on life through all his issues and all his woes, he still had such positivity about him, and that was so infectious, and people always responded well to him. So rest in peace, James. We'll miss you, but your spirit lives on through the people that your life touched, and in the town that will never forget you, we will miss you buddy."
