A Monaghan councillor has praised energy supports signed off by Government.
The Government has signed off on a €250 million package.
From midnight, excise duty on petrol will fall 15 cent a litre, with a 20 cent a litre reduction in diesel until the end of May.
Ministers say they expect that reduction to be passed to consumers at the pump.
The fuel allowance season has been extended by four weeks for the 470,000 people in receipt of that payment.
Cllr Alan Johnston said the priority will be introducing targeted measures towards those who are hurting the most.
The Fine Gael representative said it's a very fluid situation at the minute and there is much volatility in the oil price market alone, with things changing on a daily basis.
He firmly believes that the Government will be monitoring prices at forecourts over the next few days.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Johnston said despite criticism, the Government is there to to help alleviate some of the pressures facing people when it comes to rising costs.
He explained: "Some people were calling for measures to be introduced a number of weeks ago, however if we done it we might not have been able to go far enough, there was a lot of volatility in the oil market yesterday alone.
"These are measures that are introduced for limited time and will be reviewed at the end of May and if the conflict continues and prices continue to rise then it will be addressed and reviewed."
