Cathaoirleach of the Ballybay-Clones MD, Cllr Sinéad Flynn, has welcomed the allocation of funding for low-cost safety initiatives in Doohamlet village.
Cllr Flynn also highlighted ongoing concerns around speeding in towns and villages across the district.
Cllr Flynn said the investment in safety measures for Doohamlet is particularly timely following reports of a motorist travelling at over 110 kilometres per hour in a 50 km/h zone in the village over the weekend.
She said the incident underlines the seriousness of the speeding problem and the need for continued action to improve road safety in local communities.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Flynn said we need to identify the areas where speeding continues to be a problem and work together to deliver further traffic-calming measures.
The Sinn Féin councillor also highlighted ongoing concerns from residents in Smithboro and Rockcorry, where locals have been raising issues around speeding through the village: "Residents in Smithboro and Rockcorry have also been raising concerns about speeding, and there have been calls locally for traffic-calming measures such as speed cushions."
Cllr Flynn stressed that proactive steps must be taken to address the issue before a serious accident occurs: "We should not be waiting for a tragedy before action is taken. We need to act now to make our villages safer for residents, pedestrians and road users."
