Reacting to confirmation by the Department of Agriculture of a case of Atypical BSE in a nine-year-old cow, local farmer David Hall said the development was disappointing.
However, the Newbliss farmer emphasised that it shows the effectiveness of Ireland's BSE surveillance scheme.
David Hall is the IFA's Animal Health Chair.
He said that Ireland's systems are designed to identify and isolate such instances, and that is exactly what has occurred.
Mr. Hall stressed that there is no food safety risk to consumers.
