The local minister with responsibility for AI says all options are open to tackling teenage social media use, including a ban on smartphones for those under 16.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Simon Harris and Communications Minister Patrick O'Donovan have called for such a ban, but the Government is waiting to see what the EU will do before Ireland makes a move.
Minister and Cavan-Monaghan TD Niamh Smyth says children must be safeguarded at all times and believes children should not own a smartphone.
Minister Smyth says the government are looking very closely at banning young children from social media platforms.
