While visiting Cavan this evening, the rural affairs minister was being backed by Minister of State Niamh Smyth for the top job whenever it may become available.

“Dara is no stranger to these parts and every other ministerial role, he's been very good in those roles and I think Dara is certainly one to watch” - said Minister Smyth.
He is one of the most articulate and highly energised senior ministers within the party of Fianna Fáil.
When asked about what the current leader might think of her comments, she said “well, the boss is the boss, and he'll be there until he's not the boss, but when he isn't the boss, I have no doubt that Dara is a very ambitious cabinet minister, and I look forward to seeing him in whatever role he decides to take on the coming months ahead.”
