Almost one pupil in eight primary schools in Ireland was in oversized classes last year, despite average class sizes falling to their lowest level in two decades.
Figures published by the Department of Education on enrolments at more than 3,100 primary schools around the country show one in three had at least one overcrowded class.
58 per cent of classes at Kilnaleck National School, Co Cavan are overcrowded, while 47 per cent of classes in Edenmore National School in Co Monaghan are also overcrowded.

Elsewhere, no classes have been reported to be overcrowded at Crosserlough National School and the Killinkere National School.
Urbelshanny National School, in Co Monaghan also recorded a similar figure of zero per cent.
