The advice comes as a support service for people with family members suffering from addiction has expanded locally.
The Family Addiction Service Network opened a new centre in Monaghan town this week.
The service offers support to people and families who are impacted by a loved one's substance misuse.
Some of the supports offered include one-to-one counselling, support groups, educational programmes, well-being and educational workshops and support responding to drug related intimidation.
Speaking to Northern Sound, founder and voluntary Family Support Coordinator, Gwen McKenna said people can often put their own needs second.
