The advice comes as a support service for people with family members suffering from addiction has expanded locally.
The Family Addiction Service Network opened a new centre in Monaghan town this week.
The service offers support to people and families who are impacted by a loved one's substance misuse.
Some of the supports offered include one-to-one counselling, support groups, educational programmes, well-being and educational workshops and support responding to drug related intimidation.
