Monaghan County Council has confirmed following a written question by Cllr Niamh McCooey that it will now be hiring a fulltime Irish Language Officer as part of a strategic plan.
Cllr McCooey welcomed the news adding that local activists, particularly those involved in Muineachán le Gaeilge have called for this to happen for quite some time.
According to Cllr McCooey, the implementation of the Irish Language Officer will now allow Monaghan County Council to be compliment in the Irish Language Act.
The recruitment call will go out by the end of May for the fulltime post.
Speaking to Northern Sound, the Sinn Fein representative said the Irish Language is not a thing of the past and is something that will help shape our future and strengthen our identity.
She said there has been a huge revival across the country and Monaghan is central to that as it holds the highest percentage of children attending Gaelscoileanna outside of the Gaeltacht areas:
