County Monaghan is at the bottom of government funding towards the Local Improvement Scheme which is used to resurface private laneways in rural communities. Although Monaghan County Council received applications from 273 homeowners wishing to avail of the grant in 2024, government only provided funding of €938,444 which is only enough money to re-surface eight private lanes
Only Leitrim received less than County Monaghan in 2024 with 20 counties receiving more. In the same year, County Cavan was awarded €1.92million, which was only enough money to repair eight laneways there too.
The information came from a parliamentary question put to the Minister for Rural Development Dara Calleary who is in Monaghan today. Matt Carthy says it's "scandalous" (listen below):
