Recreation of missionary route of St Columbanus in Co Monaghan

Proceeds from the event will go towards the Monaghan SOSAD branch.

People will come together in Co Monaghan this Sunday to recreate the missionary route of St Columbanus as he followed the pilgrim path to the ancient monastic site at Bangor, Co Down.

The 11KM pilgrim walk will kick off at 2pm this Sunday from the St Joseph Pastoral Centre in Monahan Town and will finish at the Church of Ireland Hall, Glaslough via Ballyalbany Presbyterian Church.

Proceeds from the event will go towards the Monaghan SOSAD branch.

Local historian Enda Galligan says this particular route is all about walking in the footsteps of St Columbanus who walked the same route in Co Monaghan 1400 years ago.

Enda who is one of the key organisers of this event outlined to Northern Sound that the 'Columban Way' is in fact a European route, therefore making Monaghan part of a European pilgrimage route.

As a result, Enda believes there is "huge potential" from a tourism point of view for Co Monaghan in relation to this:
