There were over 440,000 cattle in herds across the Northern Sound region last year.
The finding comes from a recent report compiled by the CSO.
The CSO provided a break-down of the number of cattle per county.
Co. Cavan has the biggest herd locally, with 229,100 cattle being raised in the county as of last year, with over 39,000 of these being dairy cows.
In Co. Monaghan, the latest figures show almost 41,000 dairy cows out of 220,300.
In total, there were over 449,400 cattle in herds across the Northern Sound region last year, according to figures from the CSO.
The number of cattle in Ireland in June 2024 was 7,183,100, a fall of 2.2% when compared to the same month in 2023.
