Senator Robbie Gallagher raised the matter of additional funding for roads in Cavan and Monaghan in the Seanad this week
He also invited Minister Eamon Ryan to the region so that he can see for himself, "the genuine need" for extra funding here.
Senator Gallagher says that the recent Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) funding which included €371,000 for Cavan and €352,000 for Monaghan was "inadequate".
He said that the poor condition of routes across both counties is wrecking vehicles and testing motorists' mental health.
"In places like Monaghan and Cavan we don't have a rail network; we don't have a Luas," Senator Gallagher continued.
"Therefore, the only show in town is the roads
"And people travel on those roads every day of the week whether it's to take the kids to school or go to work.
"I made the point to the Minister that by not allocating funding to the local roads network, it creates a false economy.
"By not keeping the roads up to a certain standard, they further deteriorate with every year that passes."
