After almost 200 years in operation, the Northern Standard have announced that they will cease operations.
The Northern Standard which has been the longest established newspaper circulating in County Monaghan has been telling Monaghan's story every week since the first issue was published back in January 10th, 1839.
The largest regional newspaper in County Monaghan will be published next week for the last time in 186 years. A copy of the first edition is preserved in the National Museum in London.
Management at the local paper said the consumption of news has increasingly shifted to online media, while print newspapers have struggled to compete with digital platforms and social media outlets.
They say the challenging circumstances created by this radically altered and irreversible commercial environment has seen the paper struggle to sustain its long-term viability,
Sinn Fein Councillor Sinead Flynn says the loss of the Standard is a sad day for Monaghan.
Senator Robbie Gallagher says the paper is an institution for so many and will be huge loss to the farney county.
