As only one of 20 waterways remaining in Ireland which has a pristine supply, Tydavnet Group Water Scheme has ben awarded almost half a million euro for maintenance and repair work at Scotstown River. The funding has come from the PEACE + programme to benefit farmers and householders in the north Mongaghan area and across the border in Armagh.
The Environmental Protection Agency has designated the Scotstown River a "Blue Dot" waterway in recognition of its current high-status water quality. It is the only catchment in County Monaghan and only one of 20 in all of Ireland to enjoy this designation.
The €500,000 in funding is to go towards projects like repairs along the river to help the Group Water Scheme maintain its high status. Manager Sean Clerkin says the money will future-proof the quality of the water supply for the 1,100 households on the Tydavnet scheme for years to come (listen below):
