Senator: Abortion proposal 'moving the goalposts'

"Central to that decision, was the three day mandatory reflection period. I'm disappointed that Sinn Féin is the latest party to come forward proposing to move that mandatory wait."

Local Senator, Robbie Gallagher has expressed concern about proposal to end the three day wait for an abortion.

This is despite the Taoiseach, Tanaiste and Health Minister indicating they will vote for the bill to pass through the Dail.

The change is being tabled by Sinn Fein this evening, and TDs have a free vote on the issue.

Senator Gallagher explained his position in the Seanad this morning.

The referendum in 2018 included the three-day waiting period, and Senator Gallagher outlined that is what was voted for.

Speaking in the Seanad, he said that it's "moving the goalposts" on the Irish people.

He said: "Back in May 2018, the Irish people decided the repel the 8th amendment. We all fully accept the decision of the Irish people on that date.

"Central to that decision, was the three day mandatory reflection period. I'm disappointed that Sinn Féin is the latest party to come forward proposing to move that mandatory wait.

"I think that we're moving the goalposts on the Irish people. We asked them to vote for something, we gave them the detail, they voted," Senator Gallagher explained.
