Taoiseach offers condolences to family of siblings drowned in Kerry

'Dessie Byrne was originally from Athlone, but had been living in Lecarrow in Co Roscommon'

The Taoiseach has offered condolences to the families and friends of a brother and sister who drowned tragically in Co Kerry.

The couple who have been named locally as 50 year old Desmond Byrne and 62 year old Muriel Eriksson, had been visiting the area at the time.

It's understood Mr Byrne had heroically gone to the assistance of his sister, who got into difficulty while swimming at Ballybunion.

The alarm was raised by a teenager on the beach, and rescue services were engaged, but both were pronounced dead a short time later.

It is understood Mr Byrne was originally from Athlone, but had been living in Lecarrow in Co Roscommon, while his sister had an address in Malmo, Sweden.
