TD calls for strategic rail review for Monaghan

"The government expects us to pay extortionate prices for our petrol, diesel."

A local TD has called for a strategic rail review for the return of rail transport to Co. Monaghan.

Sinn Féin TD Cathy Bennett highlighted that counties Monaghan, Cavan, and Donegal do not have a rail network.

She called for the Minister for Transport to use the shared island fund to link railway networks north and south of the border.

Deputy Bennett also outlined that there was previously a rail network in Co. Monaghan.

The Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Seán Canney, said that he has identified projects that can be done quickly in relation to rail networks.

He outlined his goal of ensuring that the west, and northwest are all connected by rail.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Bennett said that a rail network is needed in the region.

Deputy Bennett said: "We need to have a rail network here.

"The government expects us to pay extortionate prices for our petrol, diesel, all we have is a bus service going from Monaghan.

"Why are we having to pay an additionality all the time, in relation to petrol and diesel, while other parts of Ireland have a choice.

"The Minister was very forthcoming, I have to say. He said he would be very interested in seeing a rail network going to this region, to help people use public transport more," Deputy Bennett added.
