Tributes are pouring in this morning on the passing of Castleblayney native Henry McMahon.
He was an integral part of the county music scene for up on six decades from and hailed from Castleblayney and became known to thousands of country music followers as the band leader and announcer with Big Tom and The Mainliners.
He also was known for writing songs and was the driving force behind so many well known country music artists, allowing them to gain success in the industry.
One tribute online this morning described Henry as a Legend, a great songwriter, a manager, a musician and a character.
Michael English said Henry was a true legend in Irish entertainment and someone who he owed so much to throughout his own career.
“Henry was first and foremost a real gentleman. He was also a genius in every way and started my career when he wrote The Nearest to Perfect for me. I honestly believe that I wouldn’t be in showbusiness today without him and that song.
“Henry was truly one of life’s gentlemen and will be greatly missed by so many.”
Robert Mizzell said online in a tribute that, “we mourn the loss of a legend.”
Another tribute on social media said his contribution to country music will not be forgotten, and he will be fondly remembered by all who knew him and by the many fans who enjoyed the music he helped create over the years.
