There was “united” cross-party support in Monaghan County Council to assist Mandy Kelly to bring her children home from Egypt.
Her children, Zayn and Karee were taken to Egypt by their father in 2022, and have not returned.
Since then, Mandy has been engaged in an incredibly long and complex legal and diplomatic battle to bring her sons home.
This week, local councillor Seán Conlon submitted a powerful motion to Monaghan County Council, calling for “the Irish Government continue to pursue every diplomatic, legal and practical avenue available” to help Mandy.
To emphasise the cross-party support, the motion was proposed by Cllr. Bronagh McAree, and seconded by Cllr. Pauric Clerkin.
Speaking to Northern Sound this morning, Cllr. Conlon called for government action.
He said: "The obstacle, with the exhaustion of all legal avenues, there is no point talking about further legal interventions - these have all been done and exhausted.
"There is one thing that this government can do, and that is ensure that this travel ban is lifted.
"If there was a proper investigation into how the travel ban was initiated, it would be deemed illegal. Because it was done fraudulently," Cllr. Conlon explained.
