The Irish Council for Civil Liberties is urging caution around the move to arm frontline Gardaí with tasers.
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly wants to introduce the non lethal weapons to help officers protect themselves.
A pilot project to equip Gardaí with stun guns is now being planned.
