West Cavan resident goes above and beyond to make roads safer

Phyll Canty said council workers carry out repair works to potholes "almost immediately" after she reports it.

A Co Cavan woman is on a mission to make rural roads safer.

Phyll Canty is originally from Lancashire but now lives close to the village of Swanlinbar in West Cavan.

Sharing her story on today's Joe Finnegan Show, the 80-year-old said she is dedicated to making roads safer by cutting roadside grass and cleaning signs, particularly at busy junctions.

Other positive actions carried out by Phyll to remove hazards includes contacting Cavan County Council when she notices a pothole.

While Phyll warned that pothole can be "horrendous" in places, she also praised the "suburb work" of Cavan County Council staff who respond "almost immediately" when she notifies them.

The West Cavan resident believes members of the public have a responsibility to contact the local authority and report potholes in order to make our roads safer.

She said Cavan County Council cannot deal with the problem if they are unaware of where potholes are situated:
