It was another successful weekend for Offaly native Alex Dunne, who’s second place finish in yesterday’s Formula 2 feature race in Barcelona saw him remain in fourth place in the overall championship standings with six weekends to go. It wasn’t the greatest start to his weekend as the Rodin Motorsport driver finished eighth in Saturday’s sprint race, but Dunne made no mistake on Sunday, clinching a podium finish after taking the lead on the opening lap; however he was passed by eventual race winner Rafael Camara and Bulgarian Nikola Tsolov by virtue of both drivers having fresher tyres. Dunne finished the race in third, but was promoted to second after Tsolov was penalised by the stewards for overtaking outside of track limits, meaning Dunne finished on the second step of the rostrum. Speaking after the race, Dunne said in relation to his consistency that
I think we were starting to build a bit more momentum. We've had three podiums in a row now in the Feature Races, which is nice.
Dunne remains in fourth in the Championship, and despite dropping four points to leader Gabriele Mini, he’s still firmly in the race for the title as he looks to build on these promising results. Formula 2 will return on the weekend of the 26th-28th of June, as the championship rolls on to Austria; a venue where Dunne had little joy or luck at last year.
