Today marks 100 years since the 1918 election, the first where women had the right to vote. It also saw the formation of the first Dáil, with Sinn Féin winning 73 of the 105 seats contested on the island.
Locally among the four seats in this region, founder of Sinn Féin Arthur Griffith won in Cavan East, with controversial figure Ernest Blythe winning in Monaghan North. Local historian Dermot McMonagle spoke about the significance of the election on The Wider View this afternoon:
