A Co Cavan Senator is urging anyone who is in fear or danger due to domestic abuse or any other crime to contact Gardai as soon as it is safe to do so.
That's according to Aontú's Sarah O’Reilly who has called for new figures obtained by her party on domestic abuse to be taken seriously.
Senator O'Reilly said it is of great concern that in the past year alone, domestic violence callouts by gardai have gone up by 3% and as high as 16% in some areas.
Callouts for the Cavan-Monaghan area were slightly above the national average at 4%.
The Cavan Senator believes that the rise in domestic violence calls likely reflects a higher level of abuse.
Jodie Curran has been speaking with Senator O'Reilly in relation to the issue.
