People in the Monaghan area are being urged to take precautions to prevent the spread of crayfish plague in the River Blackwater catchment.
A number of dead white-clawed crayfish were discovered during routine surveys in a headwater of the river in Co Tyrone.
It follows a similar outbreak in a river near Virginia in May.
Crayfish plague is a type of water mould and can cause mass casualties of crayfish.
People are reminded to remember the Check, Clean, Dry and Stop the Spread guidelines if they’re using waterways in the region.
