Thomas Downs' grand-mother is a Cavan native from Swanlinbar.

An 18-year-old with strong links to the Northern Sound region is running to be the next Mayor of New York City.

Thomas Downs' grand-mother is a Cavan native from Swanlinbar, while his great-aunt hails from "The Walk" in Roscommon Town.

The election is on the second of November and Thomas is running as an independent candidate.

The winner of the election will lead a city with a population of around nine million and a budget of close to $96 billion.

Thomas is an Irish African-American and he told the Joe Finnegan Show that this allows him to "connect with two very large groups within New York City":
