Leading pest control experts, Rentokil, say they have received a 33% increase in rat-related call-outs in the Shannonside / Northern Sound region.
Recent statistics show the number of rat-related call-outs in January 2024 rose by a third compared to January 2023. Rentokil say they are "concerned" over the notable surge in the Northwest region, encompassing counties Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo, Mayo and Donegal. Colm Moore, Area Technical Manager for Rentokil says rats are "unlikely" to be a threat to humans and he says there are steps people can take to detect and protect their property against them.
He blames the unusually warm winters for the increase in their numbers:
