Amount paid out in personal injuries claims falls by half since start of the year

New personal injuries guidelines reducing the amount that can be awarded for some injuries came into effect at the end of April.

The amount paid out in personal injuries claims has fallen by half in the last six months, according to data being presented to Cabinet Ministers this morning.

The Personal Injuries Assessment Board data shows a significant drop in the level of payouts.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar will present a report to his cabinet colleagues on the first six months of an action plan to cut the cost of insurance.

Preliminary data from the Personal Injuries Assessment Board indicates the average payout has decreased by 50% since the start of the year.

New personal injuries guidelines, which reduced the amount that can be awarded for some injuries, came into effect at the end of April.

Cabinet will also be updated on talks between the Government and the hospitality sector around the re-opening of indoor dining.

After talks yesterday it's expected vaccine passports will be issued to the some 1.8 million fully vaccinated people, allowing them to fly abroad or possible to access indoor dining under the same system.

Ministers will also be updated on the changes to the vaccine roll-out plan.

Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue will bring a memo to cabinet on extra vet and certification checks on exporters likely to be needed from October because of Brexit.
