Anyone considering getting a dog this time of year is encouraged to check the local pound first.
Brendan Smyth is the Monaghan County Council veterinary officer and says there will always be dogs and sometimes puppies in their care in need of a home.
However, should a family decide to purchase a puppy they should request to visit the breeder and see the mother, as any genuine breeder will be happy to comply with such a request.
