A special event was held in Co Monaghan yesterday to honour the Appelbee family.
The Cathaoirleach, Cllr PJ O'Hanlon and Members of Monaghan County Council were honoured to host a Civic Reception at the Shirley Arms Hotel in recognition of the extraordinary courage and resilience of the Appelbee Family.

Originally from Magheracloone, Joanne Appelbee and her family, now living in Perth, displayed remarkable strength in the face of an unimaginable ordeal following a kayaking incident on the 30th of January.
In an act of incredible bravery, Joanne’s son Austin swam for four hours to reach shore before continuing for a further two hours on foot to alert rescue services—an effort that ultimately led to the family being saved.

His determination, alongside the resilience of the entire family, is truly inspiring.
This special evening was an opportunity for the people of Monaghan to recognise and celebrate the Appelbee Family’s courage, and to honour their deep connection to the county.
