There was a campaign to protect the building.

Cavan County Council has approved the demolition of the former Palais ballroom in Belturbet.

It will be replaced with two apartments, three two-storey houses and two bungalows.

The building was at the centre of the "Save the Palais" campaign in 2018, after Cavan County Council announced plans to knock the building and replace it with social housing.

The building was extensively damaged in a suspected arson attack that September.

Erne Palais Limited has now been granted planning approval to knock the building and build apartments and houses in its place.

As part of the plans the Palais's front façade is to be retained.

The local authority granted approval subject to 13 conditions.

Two submissions from a local resident were made, citing concerns over traffic and a potential impact on a local playground and parking.
