Cabinet set to approve extension of fuel excise cuts

Cabinet is set to approve an extension of the excise cuts on fuel this morning.

They had to been due to expire at the end of July.

While the Taoiseach and Tánaiste had already promised there would be no cliff edge cut-off to the reduction in excise duty, pressure was mounting to give the public and industry certainty on the future of fuel supports.

Following a meeting of Micheál Martin, Simon Harris and the leader of the Independent group in Government, Seán Canney, they've announced the cuts will be extended until the 1st of September .

It means motorists will continue to benefit from the 32c a litre reduction to diesel and 27c a litre reduction to petrol for another month.

The excise cuts will then be phased out over the following four months.

It's not yet clear what that phase-out process would look like, but Government will be keeping a close eye on matters in the Middle East, in the hope oil markets settle before the end of the year.
