'There is no division on this border, we are all working together, we are all the one people and we are proud of what we can achieve by working together'

Calls have been made on Monaghan County Council in conjunction with Fermanagh & Omagh District Council to make an application to the Shared Island Unit in the Department of the Taoiseach Michael Martin TD for funding for the restoration of local roads. The roads, which are being described by local councillors as being in an "atrocious condition" are in the Connons/Drumully area of Co Monaghan.

Cllr Seamus Coyle says it is an area that is unique to the border and because the government's Shared Island initiative aims to harness the full potential of the Good Friday Agreement by enhancing cooperation, connection and mutual understanding on the island, a funding allocation to improve the roads would be a very appropriate step to take.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Coyle said "true collaboration" can only take place on the ground and that's what will build relations between all communities in the border areas of Fermanagh and Monaghan, where he described people as "neighbours" who work together on a-daily basis. He added that the people of Connons/Drumully area need proper roads that our fit for purpose.
