There's been calls for a Campervan Park to be considered for Carrickmacross by once local councillor.

At Monday's meeting of the Municipal District Council, Councillor Colm Carthy put forward a motion to seek funding through the Outdoor Recreational Infrastructure Scheme), or similar funding streams, to establish a Campervan park for the area.

Speaking to Northern Sound News the local Sinn Fein Councillor says the purposed park would be situated on council-owned lands which would not be suitable for development.

He said that a significant number of people ask me, every year, why there are no proper campervan sites in Co. Monaghan.

There is currently a two-bay parking area at Lisanisk lake for campervan parking, but it's only for temporary parking and doesn't have water or electrical connections.

Councillor Carthy says that there is a plot of land beside the Civic offices, towards the social welfare office, that may not be suitable for building on and would be ideal for this facility.

The Carrickmacross native says he feels this park would benefit the Monaghan tourism sector going forward.

The recent June Bank Holiday weekend saw more than 20 campervans use the Inver College grounds to camp on; there were approx. 50 people who spent 4 nights in Carrick, spent money in our shops and restaurants and, by all accounts, will be returning next year in greater numbers.

The motion was seconded by Councillor Noel Keelan and was agreed by all other members.
