'The traffic started to come and it came from everywhere'

A service station operator in Carrickmacross dropped diesel prices to below €2 last Friday in a move that saw his small business boom over the last few days.

Michael Birdy decreased his diesel price to €1.99.9 and his petrol price to €2.03.9 over the weekend in an effort to "give something back" to customers.

But when word got out on social media about Michael's endeavours, motorists from Inniskeen, Shercock, Monaghan town, Castleblayney, and further afield, flocked to the station for the cheap fuel, leaving queues in their wake.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Michael said he is watching people putting €20 or €30 worth of fuel into their cars and "not getting very far".

He also pointed out that customers are paying €10 to €12 for a gallon of petrol for their lawn mower.

Micheal says the Government is taking €1per litre of fuel while merchants are working off a margin of 2c or 3c, and the current situation "can't continue".

He says his effort will go a small way towards helping people in these difficult times.

He also added that such was the demand for fuel at his station over the weekend, he was forced to 'refuel his stock'.

"It was all over the Instagram and Facebook," continued Michael.

"Then the traffic started to come and it came from everywhere.

"Our stock went down and we had to replenish the oil in the middle of it all.

"There was a good buzz around the place to be honest - we sell coffee and ice cream here, so it gave us a marker."
