A Castleblayney councillor has called for Monaghan County Council to look at “a long term strategy” to alleviate parking issues in the town.

Aoife McCooey told a recent Carrickmacross-Castleblayney MD meeting that purchasing land to create a new car park could be a possible solution.

She says numerous things, such as traffic wardens, have been tried to deal with the parking problem, but added that traffic wardens are ineffective because of the irregularity of their presence.

Director of Services, Paul Clifford, told the meeting that pay parking in Castleblayney could be used to provide more traffic wardens in the town.

But Councillor McCooey told Shannonside Northern Sound that pay parking can’t be part of the solution:
