From next Monday new legislation will require all motorists in Ireland to provide their driver number when purchasing or renewing a car insurance policy. The change was introduced to enhance road safety and combat uninsured driving.
Speaking on today's Joe Finnegan Show, Benny Sheridan of Sheridan Insurances in Cavan says this is a "welcomed measure" adding that there has been a change in culture across Ireland over the last 20 years due to people power. According to Mr Sheridan, groups like the Sheridan Insurances , together with families and those impacted by fatalities and serious injuries have lobbied and "banged on the desk" of various ministers to "do something about it."
He says part of this new legislation will leave it that there are "no anomalies" and that the penalty points system works for everybody; "An anomaly in the system is the penalty points as they currently are. Part of this new legislation is to leave it that there's no anomalies and that the penalty points system works for everybody. Overall, I feel we should welcome this and celebrate it. It's an improvement in road safety, saving lives, reducing accidents and that has to be welcomed."
