A Cavan Councillor says larger fines are required to deal with illegal dumping in the region.

Independent Councillor Shane P. O'Reilly says too many people who are found guilty of illegal dumping only receive a "slap on the wrist".

He told Shannonside Northern Sound that it's 'outrageous' to see mattresses and sofas dumped on roadsides and says Cavan has major and grave problems
with illegal dumping.

The Independent councillor says the collection of this rubbish also comes at a great cost to the county council.

Councillor O'Reilly has called on the Minister for Justice to implement a "name and shame" policy when it comes to illegal dumping:
