Cavan County Council are one of the local authorities to open an online book of condolences for John Hume.

Cathaoirleach Sarah O’Reilly has stated that as a border area the region is a direct beneficiary of the good work of John Hume.

She is encouraging everyone to sign the book to show that the community here will be forever grateful to him for the peace, stability and countless lives he helped save in the border region

It is available on the Cavan county council website.

The removal is taking place this evening of John Hume's remains from Donegal to the Cathedral of St Eugene in Derry.

His family have asked people to light a candle at 9 pm tonight to pay their respects, rather than line the streets.

Online books of condolences have been opened by a number of local authorities across the country.
