'As someone from an ethnic background he will appeal to aspirational Britain, people who would like to see their children and grandchildren actually have a stake in the country'

"It's much too soon to bring back Boris".  That's according to Cavan political commentator, Sean McKiernan, who was speaking abouth the disarry in the UK's Conservative Party on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show.

Mr McKiernan says the person needed to lead the party now must be able to unify, bring people to cabinet from all wings of the party, and be open to listening to all the voices around them. He pointed out that the Conservative Party is one of the most successful political parties in Western Europe with Fianna Fail its nearest rival for the spot.

Mr McKiernan says the person capable of leading the party now is Richie Sunak. "He has proven right; all summer long he was making predictions that if Liz Truss followed this course that this is how the markets would react.

"And I think he has been vindicated; he would have enjoyed far greater support in the Parliamentary Conservative Party than she would have. Perhaps, not as much in the country, although the margin was a lot narrower than people predicted.

"And, as well as that, as someone from an ethnic background he will appeal to aspirational Britain - people who would like to see their children and grandchildren actually have a stake in the country.
