Cavan TD calls for increased capacity on school transportation scheme

Deputy Tully called for more buses to be put on roads to ensure young people can go to school.

A Cavan TD has called on the minister for transport to increase capacity on the school transportation scheme this year.

Since the government waived the 500 euro fee as part of its cost of living measures, 130,000 people have applied for a free bus ticket.

That includes over 44,200 first time applicants.

As a result, many children particularly in rural communities are not able to secure a seat on the bus to get to and from school.

Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, Deputy Pauline Tully said Government must increase capacity by putting more school buses on roads.

She added that by doing this, young people will also be encouraged to use public transport more frequently:
