A Monaghan County Councillor said there are minor cases where the Council needs to work owners of derelict buildings.
However, local Councillor Colm Carthy believes that comments made by the Tánaiste, Simon Harris, this week were unfair.
The Tánaiste criticised Local Authorities for their approach to dealing with dereliction.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Cllr. Carthy said that the authority hasn't been properly resourced by government.
Cllr. Carthy is the Chair of Monaghan County Council's Housing SPC.
He believes they bunch above their weight when dealing with dereliction.
Cllr. Carthy said: "I think Monaghan County Council have done an excellent job in dealing with dereliction in our towns and villages.
"The problem here, going back to the comments by the Tánaiste, I think they were unfair. The reality is, we haven't been properly resourced by government to deal with dereliction.
"The resources it takes are significant. We punch above our weight in terms of housing delivery, compared to other counties. But that comes at a significant cost," he added.
